Here's a place I stayed at number of times. I always enjoyed it - close to the Sands and the Comstock and not too far from the rest of town. It had great potential - nice restaurant, bar, clean rooms and friendly staff. No elevator unfortunately. And I didn't realize, until I took a good look at this 30 year old postcard last night, it had a pool. The casino was pretty small and must have had some of the very first video poker machines of the line. There was one blackjack table which normally displayed three blackjack video machines. In the evenings they would put a proper blackjack board and felt over the screens and deal live 21 while the "crowds" warranted it.

It's been a WorldMark time share for probably 20 years.

There was a second smaller location on West Street (one block closer to downtown) it was more of a motel with an itsy-bitsy casino. That location is now the Colonial Garden Court Apartments.

Yes I remember the Colonial. They were some of the last coin in coin out mechanical machines that dropped coins and SOUNDED like a casino. AND they always had a Prime rib dinner special...."Buy one, get one with coupon" but the coupon was always in the free "Best Bests" paper... back when Best Bets was several dozen pages. But their parking garage had the smallest parking spots.

I think I had a car bumper dinged in their garage.

So this one never became another casino, just turned into another residential project?

I would not have seen it while stumbling around Reno in the early-to-mid-'90's? I ask only because memories of that time are very pleasant, but a bit hazy...

Thanks to John, I have this wonderful book - 'The Rise Of The Biggest Little City' It's a great historical reference for all things and people who have been involved with Reno's gaming industry. According to the book, the Colonial opened in 1966 and went through a significant expansion in 1977. Along the way a couple of 21 tables were added to their 80 slot machines, but in 1998 the casino was licensed for slots only. Unfortunately the book was published in 1999 so I can't tell you when the Colonial closed it's casino doors and became a time share. (Blech!) Sad

So Stan, the short answer to your question would be you probably did walk, run or stumble by The Colonial in the mid 90's. I too, was a victim of that lovely haze. I'm glad I took pictures and have a few books and the internet to fill in some of the blanks.

Incidentally, 'The Rise Of The Biggest Little City' by Dwayne Kling is available through VisitReno's store http://visitreno.com/store.php
