Las Vegas casinos are experimenting with technology to determine who gets free drinks while gambling. More than likely, this will soon apply to Reno, just as the 6/5 blackjack, which also started in Vegas. The Grand Sierra has already started monitoring the play/free drink ratio. When JD and I were playing at a bar there a few months back, the bartender said we have to bet at least 5 coins minimum to get comped drinks. GSR is the only casino I have seen with this policy, but I don't play at many of them. I wouldn't be surprised at a parking fee in the future.

I am all in favor of it. I have seen many people take advantage of the free drinks at the bar deal. They will pay a nickel at a time when they want a drink and then just talk to their buddy. When it comes times for another drink they will look like they are playing when the bartender is looking. They are milking the system. Meanwhile, I as a player are looking for an empty seat at the bar and only finding the freeloaders. Mad

Move them out!!

As I remember John's encounter with the bartender at GSR (with the visiting cop convention) was the bartender had obviously been told to explain the "NEW POLICY" to all customers even before they sit down. It came off rude, crude and socially unacceptable to me too.

Clearly GSR had a new boss with a new policy that had never been an actual bartender. My guess he's gone by now.

When a bartender asks for your drink order as you sit down....it's asking for ruffled feathers. AS I RECALL.... John hit a $ 1000 natural royal BEFORE he even got his first beer....maybe his fifth or sixth hand. That was the night John was certain he'd caught the eye of a slot player he chased the rest of the evening.

Odd the next day, (I had a room at GSR) there was a football game at the SAME sports bar and I could not even get a seat at the bar.... and NO ONE WAS PLAYING the bartops. I made SURE I sought out that same bartender with a , " I see THAT NEW policy didn't last long." (Said bartender experienced a pronounced shortage of two dollar bills).

But nothing compares with the bartender at Diamonds a few years back. He completely ignored me until AFTER I hit a $ 1900 progressive royal.

He too, never joined the $ 2 bill club.

I saw one of these meters at the Atlantis on Thursday. The bar between the hotel check in and the waterfall bar had a small device. When I ordered a drink, I saw the bartender hit a reset button, so I asked him about it. He said their policy was you had to put in at least $10 and you can not order another drink until you played through $40 in wagering. Man- I could not possibly drink that many drinks, but I play video poker pretty fast.

I did not notice this device on any of the other bars at the Atlantis, so perhaps this is an experiment on their part?

He said the meter has stopped a few freeloaders.

This must be the same bar that Qcumber mentions in the previous post.

A long time ago in a casino town far away ... Well, it was Las Vegas. But, Casino Royale was giving away drinks just to get people to come into the casino. The freebies were margaritas only and yeah, they were pretty poor. End of story ... Pretty lame.

a Casino set down at a machine, and started playing and
waited for a hostess, and waited, and waited, and waited
but she never showed up. So we got up and left!!

I seem to remember a long time ago when someone from a casino staff said they gave drinks freely in hopes the customer would get tipsy and loosen up the wallet. I know that works on me.

Oh, Happy Birthday, Janice! (BC Dave's adorable wife)

Janice's birthday? That calls for a free Margarita...here ya go!

What's that? Not very strong? Oh, well, they're quite a bit stronger inside, at our famous crow's nest bar, with plenty of video poker...right this way, folks!

Happy birthday, Janice!

Janice says, "Thanks a Mega Million Stan!" As for the free drink ... She's working a couple of days a week at a winery and occasionally does bring home a bottle of "hose" wine. Sound appealing? Actually it's perfectly good - just the wine that's left in the bottle filling apparatus after a batch has been poured. So tonight we'll raise a glass in your honour, John's and all our friends here at VisitReno. Here's Merlot in your eye(s)!

Now, that's a toast! I'll make sure to raise one tonight, as well!

Ah, those 'hose' wines...well, they're suitable for a couple of 'hosers', right? At least, that's what Bob and Doug would call you, and meant in the nicest way possible, of course!

Cal Neva bartender to cheapo VP player. "Sir, if you're only going to play one coin per hand I can only serve you hose beer!"

Any hoser would accept that!

For better or for worse, the McKenzie brothers were put in the position of representing the entire nation of Canada, at least for a few minutes, eh?

But, no, we are pretty much officially off-topic, except to say that if the free beer *were* still available but only if you're drinking the "Hose" brand, that I'd gladly take it.
