I got some great responses and conversation on my Sands post, so I thought I would try another casino- Boomtown.

Boomtown for years was one of my- go to- casinos. They had great video poker with some games over 100% return (with perfect play), the hotel rooms were very nice, they had a great steakhouse and they would send me nice offers of fuel discounts, free rooms, free play etc. I never could figure out why they were not busier, but I kind of like the quietness in a casino. They used to have drawings for cash give away's, and I won those several times. When you have only 30 or so people competing for the drawings, you have a good shot at winning.

They would give me dining discounts for the nice steakhouse, which was very good. They had a very attractive French hostess that kind of took a liking to me. Ooh La La. She remembered me from previous trips and would always come over to talk when she could. I think her name was Yvette. When I told her I seldom would eat steaks, she told me she had not consumed red meat in 20 years. Huh? A hostess at a steakhouse that doesn't eat red meat? Yep. She gave me a compliment one time, commenting on how all the men in my age bracket all had big guts, but she said I looked in good shape. Sidebar: Do you know how hard it is to hold in your stomach and still talk in a normal voice? She told me her age and surprisingly she was a couple of years older than me. I thought she was about 10 years younger. She also told me she was not married and was having trouble finding date-able men. She asked me about my status and when I told her I was married, she suddenly was not as friendly as before. HaHa.

When the Boomtown was sold, they removed all the high paying video poker and I stopped going. I have not been in place in over 3 years, but the offers continued for 18 months and then stopped. Well, now all of a sudden the offers have started back again. I just received another offer that states on the outside "Swede, you have $783.50 in rewards." 3 free nights, free play, gas discount, free car wash, $30 in match play and more.

I am tempted to take them up on their offer.

I can see a coupon run in your future!

Swede:

Try to catch one of the regular bands that plays the guitar bar at Boomtown, "ROCK RIVER".

Just a local duo with a HUGE play list. From Jimmy Buffett to Led Zeppelin.

And the buffet moves the goalposts around but the prime rib buffett (once r twice a week) is the BEST deal eva.

If you get the same coupon book I do....use the $ 10 arcade card to fly the flight simulator. But last time only the left side controls worked. A real hoot.

And tip the guitar bar tender a deuce and see if he tells you a story about the crazy guy from Portland.

Yes...New Nugget has VP at Gilley's Bar. Drinks comped if playing... and the drinks looked expensive. It is exactly where Trader Dicks was. They hid the freeway supports behind square wood facades.

The "Guitar Bar" is at Boomtown, where I had a room...but have to check out soon.

Both Bars had live music last night.

AND I did get in that $ 3.99 THURSDAY Prime Rib Buffet. Best deal ever. Highly recommended.

Gotta run or I'll hit one of those "Gotsyas". On to the Silver Legacy (one night only)

My plan yesterday was to spend the night at the Boomtown and use as many of the mailed offers as possible. It turned out to be a big bust. Sad I stopped in yesterday early afternoon and waited in line to get a room. The gal told me they were sold out! I never made a reservation as I thought there would be no problem getting a room on a Thursday night......wrong.

I was homeless last night. I thought about getting a room at the Sands as they offered two nights, but I drove over to North Lake Tahoe and got a room at the Tahoe Biltmore. I used up some of my $700 in comps for the room. It worked out great as I came in first place in their slot contest.....$150 in cash.

At Boomtown I only used a couple of their offers. I had to get a new card as my card was way out of date. I had not played there in 3 years. I did use the $15 in free play and the $30 in match play. My plan of a nice dinner at the steakhouse did not happen. I should have used the gas discount and car wash, but I was anxious to get to Tahoe.

I also should have made a reservation, but I checked earlier in the week and they had plenty of rooms. I am still shocked they had no rooms available.

That's a little annoying to not get the room, but here's the burning question this raised for me: What the heck is the Biltmore like these days??

I felt as though it were just about to be closed, but on the other hand, it felt that way ever since I started going there in the '90's!

It has never happened to me at Boomtown BUT it has at Sands.

I took my Sands mailer up to the front desk MIDWEEK and asked for the comp offer on my mailer.

Type, type....click, scroll, ...tap, tap, tap....."So you have no reservation?" click, mouse, type, click, click....." Sorry we have no rooms available tonight..... maybe tomorrow?"

"No...I have other offers"

_________

Climb into the van in Sands parking lot....Ring, RING, RING....
"Sands reservations"
"We're down in Carson City and wondering if my comp offer is good for tonight?"

Click, type, type...." Yes, what time will you be arriving?"

ALWAYS call and "make a reservation" when outside the casino. This used to be a problem before cell phones when using a pay phone IN THE CASINO. The front desk is not authorized to honor any comp offer. They think you have no choice...especially if you have luggage with you. Call and act IFFY... "We were THINKING about heading into Reno LATER TONIGHT....are you FULL?"

Yea- I thought about calling them for a reservation, but after standing in line for 30 minutes - I said to myself, screw it. I am out of here.

I should have played a little bit more. With just 100 more points I could have got the $1 off/ gallon. I ended up buying gas at the Gold Ranch and my truck took 27 gallons.

Stan- The Tahoe Biltmore has a certain "charm". They still have the same rugs from your last visit in the 90's. They run the vacuum once a year I believe. I have a lot of stories about the Biltmore, but I will say that my wife refuses to stay there anymore. She calls it a dump.....and she is right. It is the only place that I stay, that I pay close attention to the emergency exits. I think a fire would burn the place to the ground in an hour.

One story: I stayed there once in late October and it was cold. They heat the place with steam heat and usually turn it on about 8 PM. Let me tell you that those rooms can get very cold until the heat is turned on. Well, that one night there were very few rooms rented out, so they decided to not turn on the heat. That room was very cold. I could see my breath laying in bed. I ended up putting on every piece of clothing that I brought to make it through the night. Yes, I did survive.

Thanks for the Biltmore notes - sounds like the old girl's exactly as I left her!
