I visited the site of the Silver Legacy way back in 1985. It was disguised as a grocery store - The Mayfair Market, but I found the slots. It actually had a fairly big slot area - maybe 40 or 50 machines if my memory serves ... ( yup, that's a pretty big if).

Ahhhhh the memories of actually having to walk outside from Circus Circus to Eldorado

The old "dome". I took this from an Eldorado hall window in Jan 1985. Yup, first trip.

My first trip to Reno was back in the early 1990's. We stayed at Harrah's as the Silver Legacy did not yet exist. I had true beginner's luck and hit $625.00 on a slot machine in Harrah's within a few hours arriving! I've been hooked ever since. Back then there were frequent flights from Seattle via Reno Air! There were also "down and back" junkets where you could fly down and gamble for 12 hours and fly back home the same night. Those were never enough time in Reno for me though.

I loved viewing all the lights on all the casinos at night through the haze of too many glasses of wine, walking the then bustling strip in the middle of the night, I loved the whole Reno atmosphere and truly appreciated the experiences there as opposed to the much larger and much more crowded Las Vegas. I still to this day enjoy the atmosphere and the relaxed Reno vibe.

I too have places that I miss - Comstock, Fitzgeralds, Old Reno, to name a few. And I do miss Cafe Andreotti in Harrah's. That was my favorite place to eat.

Despite all the changes in Reno over the years, I still love it there and always will. There have been very few years in the past 25 or so years I've been going that I've missed a trip down there.

Thank you everyone for the trips down memory lane. I've enjoyed reading all these stories and viewing the photos from BC Dave. Classic stuff!

My first trip to Reno was in January, 1978 from Riverside, CA. I was living in sin with Barbara, and each year we took a 4 week vacation in January. Since we had friends in Reno, we started our vacation here, staying in a campground near Bowers Mansion. Since those were the days you didn't need reservations for all the tourist venues, that was the only plan we had for the trip. When we got tired of Reno, we got in the good old Jensen Healey and she grabbed a map and picked our next destination. We did that for 4 years until she said something I didn't like, so I left her and moved to Reno in 1982.

One of the things that sticks in my mind was the time we were at a picnic table at the campground nibbling on cheese, shrimp and lobster and sipping wine. A park ranger came and sat with us, had some shrimp and said, "Yeah, it's good to get out and rough it once in a while".

As I recall, we didn't do too much gambling because we had to stretch our money to last 4 weeks. I really enjoyed downtown Reno because it was so much smaller and friendlier than Vegas. We frequented Harold's Club, which was always loads of fun.

If you beg and grovel, I'll continue this report. That's a lie. It's finished.

Oh, sorry boss, I was going to ask you not to continue. I see you're finished. OK. Like your roughing it tale.

I couldn't think of a reason to continue with my story, Dave. I am, however, a little surprised no one asked what my ex said to prompt me to leave her and move to Reno.

Yes, that did leave me kinda hanging. Seemed a little personal, but I am admittedly curious. What did she say?

I assumed that what she said was something along the lines of, "I reject your dream of becoming the webmaster for a Reno-related website and message board."

John, she obviously did not appreciate what she had. But, her outburst did send you packing for Reno - an incalcuable value for Reno and all your loyal web fans!

I hope your reply was, "Fine - I'm running away to join the Circus Circus!"
