I just found out Harrahs Reno Oct. Keno tourn. is not going to happen!
I called to make sure I had Rooms, and was told they didn't have a new
Keno Supervisior, since the Long time super Retired. Will the down slide never end?

Long time no post, but I'm at harrah's right now for the first time in 11 years and I was inspired to comment.

Wow, what a difference 11 years makes! Apparently caesars has relegated harrah's to the level of not-Binion's horseshoe. I doubt they've spent a dime on the joint since I was last here. I understand I was fortunate to be put in the west tower, but the room is still old and tired and the whole place is pretty dead. At 2:30 am Sunday (Saturday night), Legacy and Eldorado were still hoppin', but there were only a smattering of people at harrah's.

This is the only 900+ room casino hotel I've ever heard of that has no room service. The restaurants are also lacking. Hash House A-Go-Go is just a big plate of fatty food, and the noodle bar, which doesn't serve noodles after 11:00, is so bad, I'm surprised its Asian customers can stomach its food. As for the casino, there is nothing worth setting foot in here for. They've even alienated suckers by taking out most igt progressives.

On my second night here, I played a few hands of pai gow poker while waiting for my not-so-tasty rice plate to go. On the first hand, the dealer got quad 10's. Four hands later, the dealer turned over quad 10's again, at which point I scooped up my chips in disgust and left the table. I realize it's just an unusual coincidence, but it seemed fitting for harrah's Reno, as there is no gambling value to be had here.

I don't imagine caesars cares about winning here, as if you run a keno game in an undersold hotel, you definitely want to hold that keno tournament! Perhaps keno will be the next victim of harrah's knife?

I'm no keno player, but it's pretty shameful what they've done with harrah's, as there's a lot of history here. A colleague of mine who has lived here all his life said, "Bill Harrah would be rolling in his grave." I think if he knew, not only would he be rolling in his grave, he would be climbing out to go search for the scoundrels who squandered his Northern Nevada empire!

I'm gonna ask my employer to put me somewhere else next time. Ideally they'll put me in Legacy, but if not, I can't imagine even circus is any worse than harrah's, and now that the Carano's own it, circus will likely improve a great deal.

P. S. -- Internet sucks at harrah's too!

That pretty much sums up the place. The Keno tourn is the
only reason I go to the place! They have been chipping away
at it also.

I doubt the Caranos would buy it, as it's a run down property in a tough neighborhood.

harrah's Reno is the bastard stepchild caesars can't sell -- because history?

It used to be very nice, but now caesars says it's worth only 8.8 mil and needs 19 mil in repairs -- I'd hate to be staying there in an earthquake.

The Eldo, and the Aces could use it for a parking garage!

I don't know about the "tough neighborhood" part. It's still in the heart of downtown Reno, just kitty corner across the train trench from Eldorado. True, it has lost a lot of value, but so have all the downtown properties. According to the news reports, Caranos bought both the other half of Silver Legacy and all of Circus Circus for a total of $72.5 million cash and assumption of $60 million in debt, a net investment of $132.5 million. The Silver Legacy alone cost $350 million to build in 1995 so they got 1-1/2 casinos for just over 1/3 of that, without counting for inflation. If they could pick up Harrah's for that kind of bargain they might go for it. Realistically, though, I think you're right, they're probably not in a position now to be looking for more expansion.

The tough neighborhood part was a reference to the fact that downtown is indeed a bit more rough and tumble than it used to be when there were casinos open up and down the block on either side of the street; and a bit of a joke as well, considering that Eldorado-Legacy-Circus are in the same area.

These days between harrah's and Eldo lies a gauntlet of loud and inebriated houseless people to walk past or even be accosted by, when walking between the two casinos. I don't think the Carano's would touch harrah's unless they could build a skyway to Eldo -- and even then, it'd be a tough sell.

The person who might want harrah's is Seigel (I can't remember his first name) who keeps buying up old hotels and turning them into monthly short-term housing. I honestly hope that doesn't happen to harrah's. I wish caesars would sell the harrah's brand (or at least Reno and Tahoe) to someone who would make something respectable of it, as Harrah's used to be.

Reno is becoming a very different place, built on Tesla and warehouses, not gambling. However, Reno would do well to embrace its gambling history, rather than relegate it to a few hangers on, scattered throughout the city. If Californians who flock to the worst Indian casinos had any conception of what a better deal the casinos in Reno (and Nevada in general) are, they would go back to Reno every chance they got. If Reno, with the help of casinos, were to really make something out of downtown, it would be enticing to visitors and locals alike. With a little planning and money, downtown could tie together the river walk and the ballpark in a most pleasant and prosperous way.

Very true! I wonder if Reno's casinos are promoting themselves enough in the California market.

joeschmeaux,

You're right about the street scene. One of the most common complaints about a visit to Reno is the presence of the downtown vagrants and panhandlers. Cindy Carano was interviewed last week by the RGJ about the future of downtown, and much of what she had to say (or at least what the RGJ chose to print) concerned the panhandler problem; and this even though her Eldo-SL-CC properties are connected so guests can visit all three without going outside. Still, most cities have similar populations, including Vegas, and Reno pales in comparison to San Francisco when it comes to street people. One thing is that Reno is so much smaller than those cities so the vagrants are more noticeable.

The difference is that in Reno, some people are walking between casinos carrying lots of cash. The drunk (and sometimes meth freaks) in downtown Reno tend to be loud and sometimes confrontational. It sometimes makes me uncomfortable, even though I rarely have much cash on me, so I'm sure it makes people who come from places without a big houseless population especially uncomfortable.

In SF, houseless people are all over, but few of them are meth freaks, confrontations are mostly among themselves, and people aren't carrying wads of cash. So somehow the crazy ones seem less threatening than those in Reno. Perhaps that's because I'm from the Bay Area and I'm used to it here, but I definitely feel more on edge in Reno.

BTW, out of respect I try to remember to call people who have no place to stay but the street, "houseless," as they do have a home, whether it be Reno, SF or wherever. Few people want such a life and most of those who are stuck in it have few prospects to get out of it. I'm not of the means to help the people panhandling between Eldo and harrah's, but I bet if someone walked by at 1:00 am and handed out $100 bills to each and every one of them, they would all disappear off to motel rooms for the night.

We are too rich a nation to have houseless people. The irony of houseless people standing around outside of casinos is strong.

As a person who has been going to Reno since 1990 and Las Vegas since 1991 I have felt a heck of a lot safer walking anywhere in Reno than I have in Vegas.

I have walked to and from bars and casinos near the river via Virginia St and Sierra St to Circus Circus or Silver Legacy at ALL HOURS of the day by myself and never felt threatened.
