I just love the Atlantis Oyster Bar.
For those that do not know, it's a skyway bridge over Virginia Street and you can play the bartops while eating and it has a great view.

Unfortunately, between the $ 120 California Roll and the three, 150 glasses of wine at the Carbaret bar, last night was a bust.

Might have to go to the money store before moving out to BOOMTOWN.

Going off line now for a while....no more live streaming from from the wrongly pronounced, "Verdi" (Verd eye). Named after the composer, Guisepe Verdi...that presumably pronounced his name correctly.

That Oyster bar is indeed nice; I have enjoyed many a sumptuous repast there.

I wonder how many other locales named after composers are mispronounced? I won't even tell you how I utter the words, "Virginia City"...

Keep it coming, J.D.!!!

Geno Italy
Genoa Nevada

Thanks for the comment, STAN.

I only update my TR AFTER I get some feedback.

So here's the deal on Siena....gutted like a fish. The Upside down Star Trek funnels are gone. Machines, Carpet, lighting on the casino floor GONE.

And NO customers in the freshly remodeled Johnny Rockets.

Wasted money

Just checked in at Boomtown. The reservations clerk said they bough a list from Bourbon street (Formerly Silver Club)

Nice comps....I believe I will take some the $ 200 I won from GSR and give to Boomtown. Nice rooms but that 10 miles from downtown is a killer.

I also really like the Oyster Bar. My last trip I had the California Roll, but it did not cost me nearly as much as you. I think you made the mistake of having it at the bartops and losing money while I had mine in the restaurant.

I have not been to Boomtown in awhile, but during the week it is super quiet. Shhhh......you might wake up someone in the casino. The beds are super comfortable.

Oh....I almost forgot...

And I just had that California Roll last night. I'm trying to burn comps.

I hit Atlantis HARD last year so few hundred is just bitchin bait. I won exactly $ 200 from GSR and all I went for was to swipe my card.

Without Mammoth Gambler I would have never gone there.

JD brought a playmate for Charlie and Higgins. The idea was for the birds to shred the Piņata and mess up my house. Well, he failed to take two things into consideration: my house can't get any messier and the birds are terrified of their new playmate. I place it next to me when I want some alone time.

OK, JD, what have you been doing since our disaster at the Atlantis? Be sure to let us know about your booze class and what you taught them.

John: I had someone leave a message for you on your voice mail,,,,but all she would say is, "PUSH THE BUTTON ! COME ON..... PUSH THE BUTTON".

I see John knows the way to get me to update my TR. When I log on and no one has made any comments, I figure "Why Bother?"

OK... I over did at the Atlantis both gambling and drinking. Then I went to the Silver Legacy and did the same thing. Later, I went to the Cal Neva and did the same thing. THEN I walked over to the Siena and peeked thru the windows and could just barely see the casino floor. They built kind of a wall around the hotel desk (still selling rooms at $ 89 + tax weekdays....that would make it cheaper than my FREE room offers) and the bar outside the old Lexie's is open but the restaurant is NOT. The NEW Johnny Rockets is open but doing very little business. I did not drink or gamble at the Siena haunted house.... and the gaming floor would make a GREAT one. My best luck so far.

I went to see Neil at P Mill and swipe my card...No Neil, no comps, no points and ONE $ 60 beer.

Did the same at GSR. Past points have been purged, "Who the hell are YOU? "
"You need a new card...I need your ID, A DNA sample ("No...not THAT kind of DNA"), copies of previous mug shots and Mother's maiden name."

So I was well on my way to finishing my second, $ 40 Heineken at the Sports bar (which now sports a huge RED star on the bottle, giving me reason to ask the bartender if GSR bought a warehouse of old Soviet imitation Heineken.

When I hit back to back 4OK on "Bonus Poker Deluxe" which pays $ 100 on any 4OK....including my 4 Aces w/kicker while I was just playing Dbl DBL bonus a few hands earlier.

Then I drove out to Boomtown where I immediately alienated THEM by pointing out the lack of Boomtown's PHONE NUMBER on their huge flier sent to everyone that had an account at the failed Bourbon Square in Sparks (I hated those guys).

The I proceeded to put my GSRs Franklins into the bank account of Boomtown. They did have live music and great bartender that has joined to $ 2 bill club. Live music seven nights which made my last minute study for school later today seem kinda silly.

Now I'm charging my cell (oddly NO signal inside GSR) and when I lose signal, my battery goes dead quickly.

I think Eldo & SL can tell when you are just swiping your card or playing heavily....because when you STOP, they send you room offers for far out dates but not close in. Must figure out out to game their system.

More later IF I get some comments.

Does anyone want to hear about my upcoming shower?

Y'know, when you call a booze school "detention" it can only mean the lessons were terrible or you were a very bad boy, and I hope the latter was the case. Anyhow, I'm anxious to hear all about it.

As for bring the rain with you, thanks! Bring more. We have to get the Truckee Trickle flowing again.

I have not yet done my official YELP review of the event, but if you get a chance to attend a similar event in the future (this one was exclusive to Yelpers and required an RSVP) take it.

Others that were there did a far better and comprehensive job of reviewing than I so I'll do a cut and paste job below:

Very well organized event. The opening cocktail was interesting, an over-the-top variation on a whiskey sour made with Japanese Hibiki 12 year single malt, plum liqueur, lemon juice, simple syrup, Angostura bitters and egg white. The Japanese plum garnish was a particularly nice touch.

An international flight of whiskies was poured, including Kilbeggan (Irish), Glenmorangie single malt (10 years in bourbon oak barrels with 2 years finish in sherry casks, Scotland), George Dickel #12 (Tennessee, U.S.), Eagle Rare single barrel 10 year bourbon (Kentucky, U.S.), Sazerac rye (Louisiana, U.S.), Hakushu single malt 12 year (Japan).

The proper Glencairn nosing glasses were available on more than half the tables, with small stemware of the sort used for port, sherry, or liqueurs on the rest (an acceptable substitute).

Small bites were provided including "Reuben tots" (a deep fried ball of breading containing sauerkraut, cheese and corned beef), battered/fried green beans, and chunky little BBQ rib bites. All were quite good and made for a nice palette distraction during the tasting.

Closing the evening was a housemade vanilla gelato floated with sarsaparilla-infused Jeremiah Weed whiskey. This is easily the best use for that particular whiskey product (I'm normally not big on candied whiskey).

The senior spirit master knew his stuff. As a pretty serious whiskey nerd who has books on the subject and has spent plenty of time on personal, in-depth "research", I either agreed with everything he said or learned a couple things along the way. I'd be happy to hang out with that guy and geek out on bourbon alone, much less the rest of the world's spirits.

The younger "mixologist" who just moved here from Las Vegas comported himself well and definitely knows his way around a cocktail. I did, however, get a little weary of the constant, "in Las Vegas we had," references; it's the sort of conversational thing that makes me wonder why the speaker moved to Reno. He obviously takes his mixes seriously, but some of what he was trying to share specifically about whiskies sounded like something he just recently read. He was bit off on some details, and the constant mention of the "brown spirits bar" he worked at came off as pretentious (at least to me). Thankfully he threw it back to his boss for the definition of both moonshine and the origins of "whisky" and "whiskey".

Had I not had my mouth full of BBQ pork I might have won a bottle of Blanton's, that is, if I felt brave enough to impart the story of American bootleg whiskey before a group of strangers. It'd take a lot more "liquid courage" to gain that level of confidence. Besides, the sommelier did a great job; he's an entertaining guy to listen to.

Overall it was a fun event, everyone enjoyed themselves, and it was definitely worth the price. I came straight home and allowed myself a small dram of precious Whistle Pig rye (not available for sale in Nevada) and finished writing this review. Not a bad way to spend an evening.

Now THAT'S how to write a review. Too bad the pics didn't copy. I'll try again later to included photos from other Yelpers.

More later, gotta check out of Boomtown soon.

WHAT? No comments?

Back in Reno after a couple of days in Virginia City. Big doins up at the elevation that starves the brain of needed oxygen. The latest is some Californian bought the Delta Saloon and The Bonanza. Both with slots, restaurants and bars.

Then he could not get his gaming license. So now there are more closed businesses on the Comstock with winter coming.

But they always have events. Last week it was HArleys, this week it was the Outhouse races.

http://virginiacitynews.com/undie-run-relay-to-be-part-of-this-weekends-outhouse-races-p6858-1.htm

So ONE more event...The Italian Festival in downtown Reno.

Anyone besides me ever gone?

I had internet connection issues which I solved, but I had to get a new computer, so I am now once again up and running, but while I was checked out of cyberworld it looks the JD's trip reports kind of faded away. Do you have any final thoughts on the Reno trip?
