See how your luck improves as you approach Reno? (Vegas - not so much).

Winds over 100 mph in Tahoe, heavy rains predicted.

Cut & Paste from RGJ:
4:30 p.m. update: A powerful Pacific storm fueled by an atmospheric river of moisture continues to push toward the Reno-Tahoe area and is looking wetter and wetter, with up to 3 feet of wet snow now expected in the Sierra's highest elevations by Saturday and heavy rain below.

Wind gusts of up to 80 mph were already being clocked along the Sierra crest Thursday afternoon – when high temperatures reached 70 degrees in Reno and broke a record set in 1995 -- with a freight train of damaging wind on its way for Reno Friday.

"It's breezy out there but it's not anything crazy yet. Nothing like we're expecting Friday," said Alex Hoon, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno.

A high wind warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday, with steady southwest winds of up to 45 mph gusting to 70 mph expected in the Reno area. Wind-prone areas such as Galena and Washoe Valley could get gusts to 85 mph, while winds along Sierra ridges will "easily" exceed 100 mph, according to the weather service. High winds are expected to whip up waves up to 7-feet high at Lake Tahoe

Yes. People are SURFING in Lake Tahoe right now! (And skiing and snowboarding too.)

I am thinking that Visitreno is desperate for a trip report. We have 19 posts and over 1200 views of a trip report that has zero information of the actual trip. I look forward to some real information. Cool

Friday Feb 6th

Flight to Vegas was good. Left Vegas about 30 mins late for Reno due to weather issues in Reno and surrounding area. Everything was fine until about 100 miles away and ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE!!! I have been flying for 30+ years and have NEVER had a bumpier ride than I did on Friday going in Reno. It got so bad that the pilot actually aborted landing when we were about 20 feet from the ground. We flew to Sacramento and sat there for about 45 minutes then took off and made it on the ground in Reno (2 ˝ hours late). The second go round was pretty bad but not like the first. Hotel shuttle to Circus Circus where there was no line for check in. Room was fine. No complaints at all. I was in the room by 3:30.

Showered and went down to the casino (Circus and Silver Legacy) to play some video poker (quarter DDBP) and have some beers. $200 and only one four-of-a-kind later I was pretty salty and not wanting to gamble anymore. I went up to the room and watched TV until 8pm or so.

Saturday Feb 7th – Happy Birthday to me!!!

Woke up about 6:00am and felt GREAT! Best sleep I have had in a looooong time! Got showered and dressed and headed out. I knew today was going to be a long day with friends coming in town and our scheduled pub/brewery crawl. Played some more video poker (Circus Circus) and only had one four-of-a-kind again after $100 of play. I went to the sports book and placed two $20 3-team basketball parlays for games throughout the day.

Started out our crawl at the Silver Peak Grill and Taproom (corner of W 1st and N Sierra). Beer (Silver Peak IPA) is always good there as were the Potstickers. Next was Sierra Tap House (on the River Walk) for a few beers and it was GREAT! Sierra Nevada never disappoints. Next stop was Ole Bridge Pub (River Walk). I tried a Nitro Milk Stout and it was VERY good! Walked through Cal Neva and stopped at the bar for a few beers (just because). A little bit of a walk to a fairly new place called The Depot (E 4th St). It was very good but pricey! Last stop (outside of casino) was Shooters Saloon on Virginia. Interesting place!

We settled in at the bar by the sports book in Circus Circus to watch some college basketball. BOTH of my parlays went 2 out of 3 winners. Damn!!! A change of venue was needed so we went to the bar by the comedy club in Silver Legacy. The bartender was GREAT! He used to work at a bar in San Diego that I went to when I was in the service (1990-1996) so we talked about San Diego quite a bit. My two friends that had to drive back to California on Sunday (I think it was technically Sunday at that point LOL) went to bed but I kept going. Next thing I know its 6:30am and I have been up for 24 hours. Ooooops!

Sunday Feb 8th

I laid down at 7am after setting my alarm for 10am. I had to get up and shower so I didn’t miss the Sunday brunch at Sterlings in Silver Legacy. It was EXCELLENT as usual! I had three plates of food and some mimosas. First plate was shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon, oysters on half shell. Second plate was Eggs Benedict, bacon, grilled asparagus and lamb chops. Third plate was more lamb, asparagus and shrimp scampi.

Went by the sports book, played two more $20 three-team parlays and took a nap. Buckeye hoops at 2:30.

Watched OSU win handily and then watched in agony as my parlays both went 2 for 3 again!!!

Went to Eldorado poker room and sat in a $3-$6 holdem game for about two hours. Made a $65 profit and decided to retire for the night. I watched TV until about 10 or 11.

Monday Feb 9th

Woke up at 7am. Showered and went to the buffet at Eldorado. Pretty good for $10. First plate was smoked salmon, ceviche and a croissant. Second plate was Eggs Benedict, bacon, pork chop, country fried steak and gravy and quiche.

After breakfast I registered for the 10am poker tourney at Eldorado (came in 6th of 20 but no $). Played some poker after that losing $40.

I resisted the urge to play any more video poker because I was just not having any luck at all. I watched some basketball and went to bed early because I had to wake up at 4am for a 6am flight home.

Tuesday Feb 10th

Woke up at 4am, showered and went downstairs to leave. Called and waited for a cab but it never arrived. Ended up taking the 5am shuttle and luckily got to the airport and through security in about 15 minutes. Walked up to the gate as the boarding was starting. Good flight to Phoenix then to Columbus.

Wrap up

I enjoyed myself as always but it was just such a weird gambling trip for me. I never got started out positively at all and it seemed to stay that way the whole trip. I ended up spending $750 of my $1,000 bankroll.
I accomplished 4 of the 5 things on my list this time with the Awful Awful being the miss. I will have it eventually!!!

Hope you enjoyed!

I've had some pretty late nights in Reno, but I never set the alarm for 3 hours and get going again. Gotta admire your Reno spirit!

We've been wondering how your approach to Reno went, ever since JD put up a weather report further back in this thread. I had a terrifying landing in Reno once. It's come up once before on this board. I think it was 1988. The next plane overshot, powered up and went somewhere else. That's what our pilot probably should have done too. Scary stuff!

Sorry to hear Reno's casinos were doing most of the winning this time around. Still, some people go through a whole stay there without even one 4OAK - (I speak from experience). Sounds like you partially made up for the lack of luck with some great beers, and some pretty fantastic looking food. Don't forget your Awful Awful will be waiting for you next time and "chances are" some better luck!

Not a gambling win, perhaps, but it sounds like a very thorough trip, all things considered - those plates of food - gorgeous pics, I'm salivating!

Great work on the pub crawl - what the heck is a "Nitro Milk Stout"??

The bumpy flight sounds like a precursor to the gambling - what can be said? Lady Luck is an often-cruel mistress....but you made a heroic effort, and the board salutes you!

I was hell bent on making that brunch BC Dave! LOL

That landing (both times) was an unbelievable experience that I will never forget!

I will have the Awful Awful eventually

I do love a good beer - and beer appreciation is certainly a fine art - but there is just a tinge of old-school pomposity in this description:

"...Pouring hard out of the bottle, Milk Stout Nitro cascades beautifully, building a tight, thick head like hard whipped cream. The aroma is of brown sugar and vanilla cream, with hints of roasted coffee. The pillowy head coats your upper lip and its creaminess entices your palate. Initial roasty, mocha flavors rise up, with slight hop & roast bitterness in the finish. The rest is pure bliss of milk chocolate fullness."

In fairness, this is far from the worst I've seen...I was researching a possible trip to SF, and look at the language I found under the room descriptions at a place called "The Scarlet Huntington Hotel":

"An avant-garde interior reveals a contemplative design influenced by a vibrant Singapore Peranakan heritage, incorporating a bold color scheme of pumpkin, teal, and platinum softened with taupe. Be greeted with a grand visual delight of elaborate headboards upholstered in teal snakeskin like fabric, and furniture pieces of cerussed black oak with antique mirrored doors fronts. Succumb to the invitation of unwinding in a whimsical hand carved lounge chair, or get productive at the creative work center with its USB Port and electrical charging station. Mink colored silk like draperies trimmed in pumpkin frame the windows beautifully."

Yeesh. I'm sure the rooms are nice, but must we put up with such pretentiousness??

While these descriptions are blatantly full of bluster, gasconade and openly pretentious, their obvious skill with the verbiage still pales when stood alongside some of your comments and trip reports. ...... well I'm kinda kidding old boy! I look forward to your eloquent and expressive posts. And I agree, whatever happened to good old "Rocky Mountain Spring Water Fresh"?

I emphatically deny any help from those ghastly online Thesauruses!

I looked at all the pictures first before I read anything. It sure looked like it was a big winning video poker trip and fine food, but such was not the case.

That landing had to be terrifying. It probably happened so fast that you had no time to be scared.

Yes, the crawl sounds great and I am amazed at your stamina.

This was a very enjoyable trip report. I'm kind of a curmudgeon and don't like many TRs (including my own).

But this was a good one, very readable and straightforward, thanks for posting it.
