Not much happening on the old board for the last few days. Here's a few random pics from days gone by ...

(This isn't exactly a trip report, but they are pictures from my trips going back into the 80's.)

1988 - The Eldorado starts construction on it's new tower and expanded casino. I sewed two pictures together to create this panorama.

1998 (I think) - The Comstock and a bit of the Riverboat.

1990 (?) - The little Colonial. I stayed there many times, back when we could fly direct to Reno from Vancouver. Rumor had it that the coffee shop was excellent, but I always ran off to the Cal Neva for 99 cent breakfasts or 2 for 1 prime rib dinners.

1998 - Looking south on Virginia. I see Dick Clark's American Bandstand had moved into Harold's tower.

Even older - In this pic, from a few years earlier than the last, Harold's and the Nevada Club were open. The Glory Days!

2004 - I've included this photo because what it depicts has also passed into history. The Peppermill has dispensed with a lot of this neon in favour of a more subtle classy look. Personally, I liked this better.

Hope you enjoyed this. Let me know - I have more.

OK, here's two more ... Mid Nineties?

Lookin' North ...

And Lookin' South ...

I posted these before but I couldn't find the post. I took these in 1988. I liked Eddie's but it was very short lived - two years maybe?

Here's the Virginia Street entrance ...

Kinda like the old Flamingo, if you entered from Virginia Street you had to go upstairs and then back down to get to the back part at 2nd and Sierra ...

This part was where the Money Tree once was. The wild architecture dates back to those days.

These are GREAT!

I'm with you, I love the garish neon of the Peppermill in years past. It was our first visit and we stayed there and I remember thinking that my retinas would never heal, but I loved the insanity of it.

The Comstock photo made me a little sad. Those were my favorite lights in Reno. Loved the bursts.

Thanks Zydeco and NCISfan,

It's hard to believe how many casinos used to be downtown. All were within a quick walking distance of each other. Makes me sad too. Well, there's still a few of the best remaining. (Not that the others weren't great.)

Awesome pics, thanks for posting! It's great, as I never actually have seen a picture of Harold's Club, the Nevada Club, and Harrah's all open at the same time. Beyond that, I don't think I've ever seen a semi-modern photo, only the black and whites from the early days along with illustrations and paintings. I don't recall ever seeing a pic of the Eldorado in its construction stages, very interesting. Good seeing what was on that block before the Harrah's Plaza got built, and what was to the left of it that I've only known as a vacant set of buildings over the past decade. It's a riot because I used to have a Dodge Raider identical to the one in front of the people crossing the street under the arch. Good stuff for sure.

And yes, the old-skool Peppermill will always be favorable in my book. And the carpets. And the velour furniture and panelings. I'm glad they didn't get rid of ALL the neon.

I remember JD pointing out the location of the Comstock when I saw him last summer. Agreed, Reno sure has changed a lot!

Keep the pics coming for sure!

Thanks Mammoth. Glad you liked the pics. That desolate stretch of Virginia street was Reno's "Glitter Gulch" for quite some time.

I don't know how Siri's is coming along, but it must be open now. And the work on the former Flamingo/Golden Phoenix hopefully is progressing well. If those two projects get on their feet - who knows?

Yes, I've been keeping up with the progress of Siri's on the KOLO-TV website - unfortunately the RGJ site keeps booting me out after giving a few articles a read, now that they're a pay site Embarassed

Based on Yelp/TripAdvisor/Facebook and the few pictures I've seen on the internet, Siri's looks awesome! I saw a photo of the menu board at the grill/restaurant and it looks like they might have possibly carried over a version of the Phat Philly as well as the El Gordo Burrito from the Cal Neva, although the prices don't look the same. The only disappointment is that I haven't seen any Nevadan machines in there - I was hoping they'd have at least one! However, it definitely looks like they're definitely not lacking on the frozen daiquiri selections.

I take it that the Gambler was another casino? I had always wondered what was there to the left of the Horseshoe back in the day, besides the T Shirt Shop.

Thanks for the update on Siri's, Mammoth. Looks like they're doing well.

"The Gambler" was once "Eddie's Fabulous Fifties" and other incarnations before that. The Mapes operated "The Money Tree" on at least some of that property years back. Now it's the Knitting Factory. I've never been in there - it's a music venue.

The portion of the Horseshoe that had been "The Silver Spur" reclaimed the name and became the "Silver Spur Gift Shop".

I remember "Eddie's Fabulous Fifties as being on SECOND.... near that car pulling out in front of the old Riverboat.

But a couple of those casinos had multiple entrances off of the alleys.

One thing I THINK was shoe horned in between Harold's Club and The Nevada Club was "Dick Clark's American Bandstand"... BEST remembered as having that endless loop of " Bah da da da DA,,,Bah da da da, da dad DAH, DaH DUh...." music blaring onto Virginia Street 24/7/365.

The Colonial Inn DID have a BOGO prime rib (coupon required) and had some of the last 100% mechanical coin slots in town. The Nevada Club was THE BEST for the old slots. $ 35 max jackpot but they came along often.

Don't forget "NEVADA MAX" excellent site for old pics. He has EVERY Reno landmark on film.

aah, yes, Mammoth actually has a brewing company (simply called Mammoth Brewing Company - some of the best IPAs ever!) so that's definitely it. Good selection they made! Fortunately, MBC ships bottles that I've been ordering on and off since I left. I asked a few different staff members at Brew Brothers during my time in Reno if they had a similar setup, but unfortunately they don't bottle or ship. It was definitely worth a try though.

OK, now it's all coming together. The Silver Spur Liquor/Gift Shop has always been my favorite stop off, just a quick dart out the front door and across the street from Harrah's. A little bit pricier than name brand convenient stores, but it sure beat having to trek all the way down the corridor to Walgreens. I've been in the Knitting Factory a couple of times, completely not knowing what was there before, good knowing it was once a gaming venue!

I actually recall finding the Nevadamax site several years back, interesting stuff for sure. Another one I found is called oldreno.net. I had no clue that the public skating rink/open park was once the location of the Mapes...that area is huge!

NevadaMax is a great site, I refer to it often - great photography and lots of history there.

If you zoom in with Google maps you can see the sky bridge that crossed from the front Eddie's to the back Eddie's. Or click here .. http://goo.gl/maps/crkXK

Dick Clark's was a late comer at Harold's and basically took over Harold's "tower". At one time Harold Sr. was very proud of the "fun-room" they had on the seventh floor. They had a lot of celebrities appear there in it's day. Harold Sr. used to like to dress up in his western gear and emcee the shows at times. In the end though it proved to be just a bit too cramped. I searched google but failed to find any pictures except this one. http://www.postcardy.com/tackypages/belles.html

Went to Siri's yesterday. Looks nice. Both of us in the casino around 1:00 AM were donating to them.
