I am working feverishly on a trip report for the dates mentioned. I get the fever every time I try to remember the Shooters part. I'll down some Tylenol and should have it posted here in a day or two. BC Dave

The fever has broken, the report is written. (Below.)

May 1st

On Monday May 1st, at 8 A.M. four of us (from B.C. Ferries again) roared off from Tsawwassen, B.C. for the SeaTac Airport and Reno by way of the Blaine, Washington border crossing. No hassles or delays at the border and good driving conditions put us in Seattle near the Airport at 10:45. With time to kill we stopped at a Denny’s and had a late breakfast. We were at SeaTac at noon and after a drink at the Tequila bar our flight whisked us away at 1:45 for a 3:30 arrival at Reno.

We were all checked in at the Silver Legacy by 4:30 and went out to make our fortunes. I found myself at the Cal Neva playing V.P. before very long and although it was full pay, it didn’t pay me in full. Had a couple of beers on the house though. It was getting towards 7 P.M. so I went to find the guys for dinner. Calamity! None were hungry. It seems the Denny’s Steak and Eggs they had that morning were still suppressing further indulgences. I had only had an omelet and I was hungry. I wasn’t going to miss my Eldorado buffet. So at 8 P.M. I went there and made an absolute pig of myself.

That evening I found my gang at Harrah’s and I played some V.P. there and made a few bucks. Back to the Silver Legacy around midnight and called it a day shortly thereafter.

May 2nd

Got up at 9:30 and met the guys at the Sweetwater Café for breakfast. Had a good omelet on my friend’s comps. Wandered around town loosing money slowly here and there. Played a lot of goofy multi-nickel and penny machines. Anyway at 2 P.M. three of us walked down to the Peppermill and played a bit there. I had a little luck playing V.P. at a bar in the casino near the coffee shop. At 4 P.M. precisely we met John (our gracious web host) at the Fireside Lounge for Happy Hour. Had a great time, as we always do there, even got one last bargain Heineken at 6:59:58. That done, John and I had some dinner in the coffee shop...mainly paid for with his comps. I think I had an omelet? After dinner I bid farewell to John and set out to find my pals who had departed a while back for the Atlantis. I didn’t find them there so I caught the bus back downtown. (Thanks John!)

May 3rd

Up again at 9:30 and raced downstairs to look for my gang. No sign of them around the Sweetwater so I took myself to the Legacy’s Buffet for a big breakfast. It was pretty good. I remembered that the guys were planning to spend some time at the Siena so I worked my way down Virginia and across the Truckee River to the Siena. Again I couldn’t find them. I decided to do my usual shopping trip so I bought a 24hr bus pass and caught a #1 bus down Virginia to Kietzke. I looked around at Big 5 Sports, Ross, and after busing north again, Marshall’s. Pretty boring eh, shopping in Reno? Well I got some good deals at Ross so I’m happy! I ended up walking from Marshall’s back downtown because the buses were full as rush hour was now in full swing. I got back to the Silver Legacy threw my purchases in the room and then grabbed a bus to the Airport to pick up a rental minivan for a trip we had planned for the next day. I met all my pals at Harrah’s new buffet at 8 P.M. and we had a great dinner there. Although the seating area seemed a little small, the serving area was large and it wasn’t busy so we had no delays either getting a table or getting our nourishment. Myself and one other from our group then headed for………..you guessed it ………. SHOOTERS!!!

When we first arrived at Shooters, I thought that the place had actually gone upscale. Actually all that had really changed was the bartender and the music. Instead of heavy metal…Frank Sinatra. Instead of our very colorful, blonde, wired, bartendress with the unusual attire that we had met in November…a fairly normal, friendly, nice woman. We sat down for a beer. I started enjoying the atmosphere. We stayed a few hours and a variety of characters drifted in and out. Some a little on the edge and some pretty normal. Some were quite nice! We played some pool, talked and laughed and had a pretty good time. The music did get noisier but by then I didn’t care. A couple of guys yelled at each other near the entrance for a little while. Were Jerry and Hawk in town, I wondered? We left around 1:00 A.M.. We headed across the street, to the Silver Legacy. I went upstairs and hit the sack.

May 4th

We all got up early and checked out of the hotel. We then met at the Sweetwater for our final Reno breakfast. From there we went to my rented minivan and drove to Virginia City. We didn’t spend much time there, alas, as we were a bit pressed for time. Back in the van we drove out of the city a bit and stopped at the Gold Hill hotel. Like Virginia City this place speaks of the old west. It is in fact Nevada’s oldest hotel. The old place is in remarkable shape. The old bar is intact and would be a fun place to have a couple of drinks. Then it was on through Carson City and to South Lake Tahoe. The guys gambled in Harrah’s but for the most part I just walked around. The weather was beautiful and I walked along the road behind the casinos by the beautiful Edgewood golf course. We had a late lunch at Harrah’s coffee shop and then hit the road up the Nevada side of the lake towards Mt. Rose. Some road work held us up near north Lake Tahoe but we didn’t mind at all as the view across the lake was spectacular. Lots of snow on the mountains still. Then it was through Incline village and Mt. Rose. Again beautiful views of the lake from the mountains. We arrived back in Reno at the Airport around 6:15 P.M. for our 7:45 P.M. flight only to find out it was running one hour and fifteen minutes late out of Los Angles. (No extra charge for the slightly longer vacation.) Had a smooth flight home and the drive from Seattle to home seemed long as we had had a long day. Got home at 2 A.M.

All told this was a fun vacation. I’m not much of a gambler but I love Reno.

Hey no problem, Dave, I'm glad to answer a few questions.

Since my first trip to Reno in 1985, I have made it part of my trip to walk south on Virginia Street to the Peppermill and many times far beyond. I think it's a nice break from the gambling and all. My personal best was a walk to the Meadowood mall. A friend and I also trekked north to the Bonanza Casino a few years ago. I don't recommend that one. (It seemed a short distance by car.)

Yes, two of the other guys had some pretty good wins. One was up a couple of thousand by the end of the second day. That was mainly from dollar slots at the Silver Legacy and at Harrah's. Most of that he subsequently lost but he was still up a few hundred at the end of the trip. I'm not sure how the other fellow did, in the end, but he had a couple of nice wins at the same two casinos. He played mainly quarters.

I thought that the casinos were moderately busy - considering we were there Monday to Thursday. We never had to wait for a seat at a restaurant though. I've been in Reno on weekends and I some idea how busy things can get. I also remember how deathly quiet they were just a few years ago when so many closed.

I can't believe you were inside Shooters when we argued outside. I wanted to go in but Hawk said "no". Needless to say, I was not about to frequent Shooters without a friendly soulmate along. Had I known youse guys wuz in dare, I would have chanced it.

Nice report. Thanks for the time it takes to report. I would have loved to get together with you again.

You haven't even met the "Hawk" yet you call him a wimp....
I don't know about you BCers. Evil or Very Mad

BTW, how come you used a "photo" this time for the avatar instead of a drawing. That is definitely me taken in, "where else", SHOOTERS!!!!

As always, I love the Avatars. Please keep em coming. You are a very clever dude -- must not be a native Canadian. Smile
