Greetings, friends! Hope everyone is doing well. January and February have brought more good luck, and a few milestones as well.

I think I mentioned in one of my previous posts that I unfortunately had a 3 week bout with walking pneumonia over Christmas and New Years, which eventually went away, thank God. I think it was a combination of making that mad dash in the rain from downtown to the Pep for the Santa's Workshop Slot Tournament around Christmas (which turned out to be a complete waste of time), stressing about unemployment benefits getting continued (which turned out to hold true, although I could've done without the SIX WEEK waiting period for the tiers to get reconfigured due to the new laws congress passed - as bad as it sounds, thank God for jackpots!), and the general germs being brought into casinos with the holiday crowds. Dealing with that, along with having strep and getting mis-diagnosed with the flu which caused an allergic reaction to some antibiotics was no picnic. Glad that's all over!

This might be opinionated, and I apologize in advance if anyone takes offense, but I'm starting to have very serious issues with the amount of children that are being brought into the casinos. It seems like the numbers are increasing in huge amounts. The brief period between Christmas and New Years was the worst, where it seems like little kids were popping out of the woodwork - many with parents nowhere in sight. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were spent at Harrah's, where I started out speaking to one of the tour bus drivers from the Bay area who runs one of the Asian gaming tour buses. He mentioned that out of the 78 people on board, 29 of them were children. Mind blowing! On that visit, I actually saw about 4 children under 10 years old that were actually asking their parents for pennies to play the machines - that's how out of control it's getting!

Worse off, on Christmas Eve, I was jumping on the East Tower elevator and saw a 7 year old boy in front of the gift shop. He was crying. I stopped and asked him where his parents were, and he said they had literally left him alone there for a few minutes and told him not to go anywhere. Then, I asked him why he was crying, and got the worst response - he told me that his parents told him that Santa wasn't coming because mommy and daddy lost all their money playing blackjack and he and his sister weren't getting any presents. INFURIATING! I called a security guard and explained the situation, stepped into the gift shop, and used some comp dollars to get them a coloring book set and change purse, courtesy of HelloKitty and SpongeBob Squarepants. I figured it was the least I could do. The look on this little boy's face was priceless. Meanwhile, his parents finally showed up with the security guard, and they were so drunk they were barely even moving. I couldn't do anything but give them the number to the problem gambling hotline that's located on just about every player's club card, told them to seriously think about what they were doing, and then told them, "Santa came since you didn't. Don't take their presents to the pawn shop!" I seriously hope they got dealt with because they were being held by security at that point.

The period between Christmas and New Years brought a couple of snowstorms, and Tessa was having a blast. Check the video clip of her by one of our favorite spots by the Truckee right off of Lake Street. She's got it dialed - exactly 11 seconds between snow chomps to avoid the ice cream headache! She's getting so spoiled with this whole casino lifestyle, I was surprised she didn't ask for syrup to make shave ice…

(Click on the image to view the video clip.)

Early January also brought record-breaking low temps to the Reno area, and it was pretty surprising to see that Virginia Lake was almost completely frozen over. Even the birds weren't moving…

So, back to the gaming. And jackpots! Starting out with the random hits:

On January 21st, I was rewarded with a free bottle of Crown Royal Maple at the Peppermill. No complaints here!

Throughout the duration of the day, I noticed that the progressive on "Silent Bob," the Blazing 7s machine I hit twice in October, was running extremely high - somewhere in the $2400 range. I had never seen it that high, and like the case usually is, there's usually another lurker or two. In this case, it was a local lady who had it guarded with her sister and her wheely rolly walker thing for a total of 9 hours that day. I've mentioned before how I have issues with greedy slot players, but this lady is out of control. She's like a fixture there at the Peppermill and isn't really well liked. People call her "The Hog."

Well, I was checking that machine every hour on the hour, and after hour number 7 or so, "The Hog" finally rudely blurted out, "You can play this machine once I hit it." I just smiled and walked away, secretly muttering under my breath that she was DOOMED. Some people…

Fast forward to about 2 am the next morning. Finally, the machine was free, and the jackpot meter was up to about $2650. Let the blitz begin!

Long story short, about $600 of my own money went in over the next two hours, and with literally 5 credits to spare at exactly 4 am, bells were ringing again. IT FINALLY HIT! This was the biggest single Blazing 7s jackpot of my gambling career at $2716, and oh, the nervousness. Glad it worked out. I was able to snap a few shots as the attendant was resetting the machine.

(Click on the image to view the video clip.)

Not being able to sleep, I went downtown at around 9 am to check my mailbox. The kiosk of the regular Blazing 7s at Harrah's looked pretty played through at the moment, so I decided to try my luck on one of the Doubles. Good thing, because within minutes, I hit a lower progressive for $1028! It had been since Thanksgiving Day in 2009 since I had hit a lower progressive on a Double, so I guess it was long overdue. Unfortunately couldn't snag a video clip, as this kiosk of Doubles is literally right in front of the cashier's cage and tables, and of course the attendants arrived within seconds, but I was able to get a few quick shots.

The next day, I had a ton of $200 and $300 hits on various machines. Another milestone - these two $600 hits (2 red sevens and a Double symbol) were my first two 7s hits ever with that Double symbol. I was wondering if I'd ever get any!

Fast forward to February 4, where I decided to try my luck on one of the Doubles at the Eldorado. I noticed the lower progressive was looming pretty high at $1092. About $100 in, and bells were ringing again - $1094!

(Click on the image to view the video clip).

That point forward produced several more hits over the next day. It was one of those situations where instinct just told me to keep on playing.

Up, down, up, down for the next several hours, and last evening, I came across another Blazing 7s at Harrah's that I took a stab at. I was getting nervous, because I dropped about $700 in this machine with no hits whatsoever. Then, all of a sudden, the bells were ringing again: $1520!

(Click on the image to view the video clip.)

I've mentioned it before, but Harrah's has been so accommodating since we moved here. It seems like everyone now knows me as "The Blazing 7s dude." Still home for now...

After that, I stepped over to the Silver Legacy. Fortunately, I think the idiotic security guards finally caught on that I'm not "the trespasser," and I haven't been harassed there in quite a while. Although these Blazing 7s are advertised at 97.7% payback, I've noticed that they have a certain overall tightness about them, and have had much better luck at Harrah's and the Eldorado in general. I had two top jackpots last year, the last one being in April. Over the past few months, there's unfortunately been more than a few occasions where I've gotten killed with dropping anywhere from $500-$800 in without a single hit.

Enter greedy slot player #2 - an elderly man who literally told me to just up and out MOVE, because I was "invading his personal space!" Come on! But rather than argue, I moved one machine down. I swear I'm going to write a whole chapter about greedy slot players when I publish my book about my experiences here someday! However, Lady Luck turned on for me this round. These machines don't automatically ding the bell when a jackpot is hit, but rather do the counter thing before the music starts playing. Like this: $1515! Glad to report that I got something other than a lousy stinkin' T-shirt for a change. Best part of it was, after the jackpot was hit, I jumped up and yelled at him, "Hey! Thanks for letting me know I was invading your personal space! You pointed me to the right machine! Hope you lose your ass!"

(Click on the image to view the video clip.)

At about 9 am, I noticed the strangest thing. In the midst of all the sidewalk construction going on downtown, I noticed a whole bank of machines that were sitting outside of the East Tower at Harrah's. Huh? Did they open up an outdoor slot parlor? Upon going inside, it appears they cleared out half the floor inside to make way for some new machines. I'm anxious to see what's going to be put in their place.

That's about it for now. Unfortunately, still no luck finding a full time design job, although I did land another high-paying freelance gig last week with a water ionizer company here in town. Publications without advertising? I think I died and went to heaven!

Jeez, when you randomly tell someone on the street, "Have a jackpot day," it makes you wonder…damn, I gotta get outta these casinos. Or maybe I don't!

Great Trip report, Mammoth... I mean, "BLAZING SEVEN'S DUDE". ..but man, that is a LOT of play.

Have you ever figure out what your coin in is? Are you roundin up ALL of your profit/loss reports for your taxes? Make sure you get one from the joints you never had a W-2 G in to balance things out.

Are you and Tessa still bouncing around or have you landed somewhere yet? With your play, have you EVER had to pay for a meal? Tessa been livin on Prime Rib leftovers?

I know why you've been hitting so many jackpots. KARMA. Way to look out for that lost little boy with drunk parents.... God is watching.

I'm planning on a mid March trip (if weather has improved) and will probably be reporting on Virginia City's St. Patricks Day Parade/Testicle Festival at least on the weekend.

Too bad on the walkin pneumonia... did you also catch the boogie woogie flu? (funny only to a certain generation).

These reports are like a flagon of sparkling wine after a crawl through the Nevada Desert - way to go!!!

And yes, you will be blessed by some saint or another for helping out that poor little boy, as well as his thick-headed parents...perhaps they can finally work on their parenting skills.

Unbelievable the things these slot hogs come up with...you've got the patience of a saint, as well as the practice of one!

Another triumph - keep 'em coming!

Blazing Sevens Dude! Sounds like a fitting moniker. Glad the Jackpots are still coming your way. Liked you response to the poor kid at Harrah's. And to the pushy jerk too!

Thanks everyone!

JD - regarding coin in/out, I'm still waiting on forms that are coming from the Paiute Palace in Bishop, CA and a couple of other random places that don't have access online. We'll see how it works out. As previously mentioned, this is gonna be a rather complex tax season so hopefully I'll at least break even. Coin-thru statements have always been startling in the past!

Yes, we're still bouncing around. I've checked out dozens of places in town, but the same issue remains: Simply put, nobody is willing to rent to a tenant that's currently on unemployment compensation, freelance gigs and jackpots put aside. I've checked out a few privately owned places as well, in addition to even offering to pay cash for a 6 month lease in full, and it's the same story. It was the same in Mammoth, even with good credit, good rental history, no evictions, etc. Can't say I really blame anyone, I'd probably be really skeptical if I was a property manager/owner and had to deal with something like that. You'd think that with the economy being the way it is, people would jump on the opportunity, but that unfortunately hasn't been the case. The up side is that I haven't necessarily had to worry about having all rent money due at the first of the month, but the down side is that you pretty much have to have money in your pocket at all times - either for spending a couple of nights at the Motel 6 in between comp blackouts, or dealing with massive amounts of authorization holds and getting your debit card whacked for that $150 deposit every 3-5 days which can sometimes take weeks to release. Right now, I've got $1100 out in holds alone! As crazy as it sounds, I still think we're better off going the route that we're going vs. jumping into one of the pay-by-the-week motor lodges downtown - depressing scenes, not to mention places are packed to the hilt right now. I've checked out a few, and there's drug dealing, bedbugs, homeless people jumping around in the dumpsters two feet outside your door, you name it! I think the worst scenario I encountered was at the Wonder Lodge right off of Lake Street - a homeless family of 6 had been living in a single room for quite some time. Really sad. Just a few evenings ago, about a dozen cops were outside of the Sundance Motor Lodge across the street from Jackson's by UNR. Someone had been stabbed! I've also heard that alot of these places have really crappy management who will get every waking penny from you that they possibly can and are bad about returning deposits. At least there's good security at the casinos (except for the Silver Legacy! haha), and as much as people crack on the Motel 6, it's a franchise. There's a standard of cleanliness that must be maintained. The one thing that's really stood out is that 95% of the motor lodges all have signs in the office that state "NO REFUNDS GIVEN," so it's kind of like a bad accident waiting to happen. We're not high maintenance by any means, but these places are spooky - and that's coming from a guy! From what I've seen, you wind up paying more money than you would renting a nice one bedroom apartment/condo/townhouse in a nice neighborhood after all is said and done. It's been a challenge game - when we first got here, my main priority was keeping the total accommodation costs equal or lesser than what I was paying in Mammoth, which wasn't really anything major, and as crazy of a ride as it's been, we've been doing good meeting that goal. Hopefully things will work out soon, but being on unemployment is like being in jail!

Now, on the other hand, the comps, offers, and local discounts really come in handy, especially when you play a ton at places that have multiplier days. It really adds up. A couple of things I'm avoiding at all costs are trading comps for free play, as the amounts are usually divided in half if not more - do I want free buffets for a week, or a measly $20 in free play? The other no-no is purchasing things at casino gift shops. I paid $4.50 for a can of Rockstar at the Eldorado one day and felt SO GUILTY!

Oh, and Tessa? She's like a little ham around here. She's gotten so much attention and so many pats on the head, and gets ticked off when we can't get a room with two beds! She's been a lifesaver downtown too - so many people stop and ask if she's a drug dog, and just to see what happens, I usually say yes. Nine out of ten people wind up running like hell, it's hilarious! This is the first big city she's ever lived in, still looking around for the beach and the mountains. The one thing I'm trying to teach her is not to eat food scraps off the sidewalk. I don't know what it is about Reno - it's the french bread capital of the world, seriously!

Boogie Woogie Flu? I'll hafta look that one up : )

Thanks for the update. Wow, you have a lot of big hits in this report. I just wonder how long your luck can hold out? It is an unusual way you have found to survive the jobless situation. Hopefully something will turn up.

That is a disturbing story about those kids. What chance do they have in life with such parents? I hope the parents can see their foolish ways and make changes.

Blazing Sevens Dude:

Have you ever heard of a Mondegreen? A Malaropism? How about Jerry Lewis?

NOT THAT Jerry Lewis...

Jerry LEE Lewis circa 1960 AD:

Spelling violation... 15 yard penalty: Malapropism/Dogberryism :

My favorites are Christmas carols and Jimmy Hendrick's lyrics.

Jeez. I've mentioned it before, but I think I've learned more on this board than I did in my 6 1/2 years of college. Thanks for the informative information!

Yes, I really hope everything works out for those kids and their parents. It's disheartening seeing all this stuff go on. Between that incident and those kids asking their parents for pennies to play the multiliners, it makes me wonder. Most of these parents probably could've taken their kids to Disney World ten times over, but oh well...(again, just my opinion).

And thanks everyone for the continued well wishes regarding the employment/unemployment situation. I'm almost thinking at this point that I might just be better off as a freelancer. The pay is much better, you don't have to worry about the corporate mumbo-jumbo (which I'm actually still trying to release from my brain from my past 18 years in this field!), and most importantly, I'm already more than used to being a self-provider. My last full time gig in Mammoth was such an atrocious s*ith#Le, I took it upon myself to get an independent insurance policy 6 years ago because there was alot of "money skimming" going on there, and there's no telling where I'd be without it. I'm kind of in a unique situation, I've been doing graphic and web design for 18 years now and my last 11 years have been in management/department head/etc., so I can't really hide that. Most fulltimers I've seen around here are entry level and it's quite evident they want don't anyone with experience, even though I'm applying anyway. But, I'm following instruction from the unemployment police until the last waking minute - they'd rather see you stay on their program vs. getting a job at McDonalds (hell, even they aren't hiring!) Oh well, hopefully I'll be out of their wicked hands by August, which is now when the benefits are running out. So many people are asking me why I don't just bag the whole thing and be a professional slot player, but I guess I have morals!

I flew to Wendover last year for 3 nights and all the casinos were
full of the God Squad from Utah! yesterday I followed a car
with Catholic bumper stickers all over it, to the Indian casino
I was headed too! I think they have all jumped ship??
Yah not having a permanent pad would be a drag, but on the
other hand your close to the action, and your roommate does'nt
complain! Keep on winning, we'll cross paths some day.

That's classic! Reminds me of a refrigerator magnet that I have that reads:

"Vegetarians Who Eat Meat. Exercisers Who Take Cigarette Breaks. Environmentalists Who Buy Paper Plates. Animal Rights Activists Who Wear Leather."

Maybe I'll fire up Photoshop and make one that reads:

"Graphic/Web Designers With 3 College Degrees and 18 Years of Experience Who Are Making $9.80 an Hour on Unemployment and 4 Grand a Month in the Casinos!" (Give or take)

Makes ya wonder...

Hope to meet you soon!

Ah, we are in fertile territory here - something tells me these topics would be even better pursued at one of the Cal-Neva bars, but for now, this will do.

The discussion of Malapropisms calls to mind the similarly-inspired "Homophone" concept, where like-sounding words are used to hilarious effect - no cheap proclivity-bashing here; it's quite the highbrow form of poking fun at language itself.

Behold, Sad Laff illustrates:

Dang Mammoth! You are one lucky bastard! lol...What the heck. Who needs to work when you get hits like that. I never hit on those. I better give them some more trys my next time down. So are you pretty much staying at Harrahs?

I agree about the kids. What the heck? Why do people bring their kids to the casino? I really dont get that. What leave them in the room while you go gamble and drink. Nice!

Do you play at the Pep much? Just curious if they have bumped you up. My friend and i are now Platinum. I had inquired because she was bumped up after our last trip. I wasnt. I had put thru 3 times as much as her. Apparently because she actually lost over $2000 on our trip, they bumped her up. In the process of inquiring they bumped me as well.

I have been getting some good offers. 4 free nights in the Tuscany Suite and $300 free play.

Stan-that's hilarious! Crazy how some people intercept certain words literally!

ALISON! Good to see you, was wondering where you've been! Hope all is well! Yes, we're still following the "three days in, two days out" schedule at Harrah's (or like I've been calling it lately, "The DEEluxe Apartment in the Sky!") On the off days it's usually been at the Motel 6's in town, but the one on Virginia and Plumb next to the Pep has pretty much been the home spot. Go figure the general manager there moved to town the same day I did...from MAMMOTH as well! Small world for sure!

I haven't really played there as much as I could be, as they only have those same 5 Blazing 7s machines they've always had (and "The Hog" is usually there! lol) but I've been really impressed with their locals program so far. Not really getting free room offers as much lately, but they have the 20% off all food anytime thing going on, and are giving free slot play every week. Right now it's only $7 per week, but better than nothing. I've been in there lots for the Kiosk Game every Friday and a few Big Spin drawings, which are always fun. Maybe someday I'll get lucky!

Unfortunately haven't been bumped up yet and am still hanging at Bronze level. Gotta admit, the Passport club really has improved lately with all the promos and multiplier days, but I was kinda bummed to discover that they're still erasing points when the new year rolls over. It seems like they are at least letting you know how many points it takes to keep the current tier. All in all, progress is still a bit slower there than some other properties, but it's still awesome. It would be nice to have the option to get all the free play at once, but then again, that cesspool on 2nd street called the GSR is most twisted: $260 of free play a month, but they fixed it up where you can only get $15 on Monday, $10 on Tuesday, etc. Just yet another indication of how hard they're trying to get locals in there every day to spend money!

A couple of updates: I checked out John Ascuaga's Nugget for the first time ever a few days ago. Not a bad place and it's walkable from the GSR (for me, anyway!) Good knowing.

Also, I got the lowdown earlier on the clearing out of the east tower machines I spoke of at Harrah's via their Facebook page. Get a load of this: they are installing a single regulation size BOWLING LANE there for an upcoming promo! Apparently, on Fridays and Saturdays, you enter. If you are selected, you get $100 in freeplay and a roll. If you bowl a strike, you are automatically entered into another million dollar giveaway promo. This one's gonna be a riot for sure!

For the first time ever, both the Men's and Women's National bowling tournaments are being held in the same city (Reno).

Historically, the men's and women's tournaments were always separate events held in various parts of the country. It was rare to have any one city host an event more than once every 20 years. Those days are long gone.

Where bowlers are concerned, Reno is getting a bad rap because of the frequency of return visits. The men have been there every third year since 1995 until 2010, and now we are in a stretch of 4 times in 5 years.

For the women, it has been worse, every third year since 1998, and starting this year, they are in Reno four years in a row.

The last two times the men's tournament has been in Reno (2010 and 2011) the number of spiffs aimed at the bowlers disappeared. Bowlers aren't stupid... we know that Reno is throwing untold amounts of money towards the United States Bowling Congress (and at rehabbing the National Bowling Stadium) because the incoming money of bowlers is a consistent stream for four or five months. Reno needs our money. But bowlers are being pawns in Reno's desperation and the Congress's greed.

With all that said, it is about time that some of the downtown hotels embrace bowling and bowlers with more than $1 off a buffet and a $5 match play coupon.

Going all nostalgic now, I can actually remember 1995 pretty clearly. Every casino had something for bowlers (usually something decent) just for showing proof that you were in town to bowl. The Eldorado-Silver Legacy-Circus Circus each offered a specially created dollar slot token, and when you collected all three (and bought a $7 display case) you would get an even more special 4th token. The Flamingo Hilton gave a package that included a T-shirt, insulated mug (man, I wish I still had that one) and other goodies. Fitzgeralds gave goofy stuff that the kids loved, like a mood card (press your thumb on the spot and see what color it is), dice with sayings, pins, etc. Even the Comstock gave each bowler four Aces for blackjack (could only play one Ace per shoe).

I remember going doing a "coupon run" to collect our free crap... and most of it went to the kids as souvenirs. I remember in 2011, Harrah's gave a (mostly) useless coupon book, and Atlantis did, too.

So just to hear that Harrah's is installing a bowling lane for a promotion... that is very exciting to hear. Hopefully the tide has turned.

My countdown clock stands at 87 days....
