EVERETT A. LONG

Pilot, Author, Reno Resident

Few knew that during World War Two nearly 8000 American built warplanes were delivered to the Soviet Union to help in the fight against Nazi Germany. "Cobras Over The Tundra" is a history of those flights and challenges facing the young American and Russian pilots. The wildernesses of Canada, Alaska, and Siberia were still an unknown land. Pilots of both countries shared the danger flying the warplanes in minus 60 degree cold during the winter, and hordes of mosquitoes during the summer. Missing aircraft meant missing pilots who must be found quickly. "Cobras Over The Tundra" includes more than 140 high quality black & white and color photographs. The text is in both Russian and English - a challenge in itself for author Everett A. Long of Reno. Long's wife, Tatiana, whom he met writing the book is the editor for both languages.

Autographed copies of "Cobras Over The Tundra" are available at "Sundance Booksellers" in the Keystone Square, and at "The Hangar" on Kietzke.

As a matter of interest I have achieved a little notoriety on adventures, namely two aviation firsts. As you know most records can be broken -- except a First. I was the first American pilot in an American airplane to fly the Lend-Lease route of World War Two after 1942 -- LEGALLY. And I was the first American pilot to fly Russia's premier jet fighter the Sukoi SU-27 Flanker. Many have followed both trails since.

Something that is happening this year that both my wife and I are proud of is being invited as Special Guests to the big Oshkosh AirVenture 2002 in July. We'll be signing books and I'll be giving a one hour slide show and talk on my Russian flying adventures.
